Introducing…

Isadora Elliot Harris

May 13, 2008 at 18:05
7 pounds 15 ounces
19 inches long

She is the most awesome creature I have ever met, and I am head over heels madly in love with her.

When we arrived at the hospital for my schedule c-section, we were put in one of the prep rooms and were expected to hang out for a couple of hours. I was hooked up to a monitor that measures the baby’s heart rate and my contractions if any. Considering I was scheduled for a c-section several days before the baby was due, I didn’t expect that the monitor would pick up any contractions.

Well, lo and behold, while I was waiting for my turn in surgery, I went in to labor. I didn’t feel the contractions at first. And then I did. *dramatic reverb*

Sitting there with my first few contractions made me very unhappy. I don’t think Mitch or I would have made it to the other side of a vaginal delivery the same people. Aside from being medically necessary and the safest course of action for both me and the baby, I really am glad that I had a c-section instead of a vaginal delivery.

The day was unhurried; we were able to go to the hospital under relatively stress-free conditions. The surgery went off without complications, and the baby was delivered quickly. So far, we’ve been blessed with the sweetest, most even-tempered kidlet. I think a lot of her personality was kicked off by this mellow and easy experience. I’m expecting that she’ll continue on in her merry mellowness. That is until she turns 13 years old. Then all bets are off. ;-)

As long as I stay on a pain management program, I’ll be just fine. It’s only my fourth day since surgery, and for the most part, I’m up and about and taking care of myself and the baby. I’m also being realistic and asking Mitch for help when I need it. And being the awesome husband and dad that he is, he is gladly giving it.

I love my new little family more than anything in the world.

Congratulations Sheri and Terry!

Sheri went into labor two weeks early and gave birth to her daughter this morning around 12:30. Too bad we’re in different hospitals. It would have been fun to have a friend staying the same time as me.

37 weeks and 4 days

Peanut’s profile. She was sucking on her fingers during the sonogram today.

37 weeks and 4 days

I can’t believe it’s almost time for Peanut to come in to the world. I’ve really enjoyed being pregnant despite the gestational diabetes and high blood pressure issues. I told Mitch that had I known how much I liked being pregnant, I would have done it sooner and more often. I just hope that I enjoy being a parent as much as I have loved being a pregnant lady.

I got the sugar.

I took my gestational diabetes test yesterday. When I got the results today, I wasn’t surprised. I failed miserably.

To take the test, I first had to drink some nasty tasting orange liquid. It was so sweet that I thought it was going to rot the teeth right out of my mouth. Within 15-20 minutes of drinking that stuff, I felt lousy. I wasn’t sure if I was going to throw up or fall asleep or both. I mentioned to the doctor that I felt fine before drinking that stuff. She said it wasn’t a good sign.

So, what does that mean now? My preliminary research says that I need to change my diet and exercise more. It’s pretty common in older moms-to-be, and in most cases (97-98%), the blood sugar abnormalities disappear after pregnancy. I’m scheduled to see a Diabetes Dietitian on Wednesday morning.

Let the cravings begin.

Lots of people have asked if I’ve been having any weird cravings since I got pregnant. I answered that some of my favorite foods have been less appealing-the smell, taste or texture totally turned me off. When I was suffering from morning sickness, I ate really bland stuff. Applesauce and raisin bran were the only things I ate early on. Not because I craved them, but because they didn’t make me sick.

I haven’t any food cravings at all. That is, until today. Wow, it is overwhelming to be so singlemindedly focused. And, I seem to be highly suggestible. Last night, Mitch mentioned liking Peanut M&Ms. Today, I HAD to have them. I didn’t even offer to share with people sitting near me. I practically inhaled the entire bag. I didn’t think of it as a craving though. Just thought, well, Peanut M&Ms. They are pretty awesome.

Tonight, I’m lying in bed watching Knocked Up and someone mentioned chocolate milk somewhere in the movie. I don’t even recall the context, but that set me off. I laid there for an hour thinking about chocolate milk and how that sounded like a such great idea. I couldn’t suppress the urge any longer, so I got out of bed and made what I thought was going to be the most awesome glass of chocolate milk ever. Major disappointment. My Nestle Quik mix didn’t dissolve in the milk very well, and it tasted kind of funny. I checked the date on the box and it said best if used by Aug 2001. Ugh.

It’s late and it’s kind of cold and Mitch is sound asleep. What am I going to do!? If Mitch hadn’t just recently recovered from the flu, I would have woken him up and sent him to SuperFoodAndLiquorWorld to get me chocolate milk. I just didn’t want to get dressed and go outside, but I was starting to panic at the thought of not having chocolate milk.

What to do? What to do?

I tiptoed across the hall and gently knocked on the neighbor’s door. She heard it, and answered. I pleaded with her to give me some chocolatey powder goodness to put in my ice cold milk or I was going to just lay down and die right there on her kitchen floor. She laughed and gave me what she had and even offered strawberry. I thanked her and said no, the chocolate will do. I grabbed the canister and ran home.

Mmm…milky chocolatey perfection.

My neighbor, Shelly, she is a saint.

Now that I’m thinking about the strawberry again, I realize I should have taken that too. Shelly, please forgive me if I’m knocking on your door at 3:00 a.m. looking for strawberry flavored powdery goodness. Maybe I’ll just use your spare key and raid your kitchen in the middle of the night. :-)
